Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi

Mirza Muqim Abul Mansoor Khan (1708-54), better known by his title, Safdarjung, was the powerful governor of the province of Awadh and a key member of cabinet under the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah (1719-48) and later prime minister under his successor, Ahmad Shah Bahadur (1748-54). Safdarjung's Tomb is an outstanding example of Mughal Architecture. It represents the last phase of Mughal style of architecture, Safdarjung's Tomb stands in the centre of beautiful garden. It is said that by the year 1750, Safdarjung was the most powerful person in the Mughal empire.

After the death of Aurangzeb , the only significant structures raised were the tomb of Safdarjang, who was Prime Minister in Delhi. The tomb stands on a high terrace surrounded by an extensive walled garden. The Mughal 'Chaharbagh' style garden has an enclosure raising to two levels, which is entered through an enormous entrance. The central chamber of the tomb stands surrounded by eight rooms all around. The corner apartments of the Delhi Safdarjung Tomb are octagonal, while the rest are rectangular in shape. There is also a dome of the tomb that rises from a sixteen-sided base. The two graves inside the Tomb of Safdarjang, Delhi belong to Safdarjung and most probably his wife. It makes a pleasant retreat from the urban bustle. It's short walk from Lodi Garden.
