Dungarpur district is the stronghold of the Bheels, a tribe whose history of occupancy in the Aravalli range is said to date back to 4000 BC.Founded in 1197. There are a few palaces and havelis that are located in the city as well and these are also good places to visit. Some of them are the Udai Bilas Palace, Old Palace or Juna Mahal and a few others. The Juna Mahal is a multi storey building that is built in a unique style. However it is in a dilapidated state now.
Other places that can be visited in and around the town are Gap Sagar Lake, Beneshwar Dham, Srinathji Temple, Government Museum of Archeology, Rokadia Ganesh Temple and a few other places. The rulers of Dungarpur claim descent from the Rajput house of Mewar. |
